China's Power Sector Steps Up Technical Renovation

China's power industry is undergoing a large-scale technological innovation to control pollution, increase economic benefit and guarantee safe operation, said a senior official.

China will by the end of this year complete the technological innovation of 7.5-to-8 million kilowatt medium-and low-pressure condenser-tube generating units which have been in operation for at least 25 years, according to Zhou Xiaoqian, assistant president of the China State Power Corporation.

The aim is to improve the capacity of the units to meet peak- hour demands for power, increase safety, lower consumption of energy and protect the environment.

Referring to energy consumption, the official said that coal consumption in power plants in China will be reduced by an average 34 grams for generating a kilowatt hour of electricity by the end of this year.

In addition, electricity voltage in major Chinese cities will be up to standard at a rate of more than 95 percent, and the reliability rate of power supply will reach more than 99 percent, he stressed.

The official noted that the power grids in China will strengthen coordination in power supplies, so that the capacity of the country's five major regional power grids and 15 provincial power grids could reach international standards in the transfer and control of power supplies.
