China Opposed to National Separatism, Interference: Spokesman
China treasures friendly relations with neighboring countries, and allows no interference into its internal affairs by any country in the name of ethnic affairs or religion, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi at a press conference Tuesday here in Beijing.
In response to a question on President Jiang Zemin's upcoming visit to Turkey and on exiled Uygur (ethnic group) separatists based in the central-Asia region, Sun said that China attaches great importance to unity, equality and common development between different ethnic groups in the country, and strongly opposes national separatism in any form.
National separatism "has played a negative role in national and regional stability," Sun pointed out, saying that the Chinese government has kept close watch on the situation and has expounded its position on this matter to relevant countries.
"We believe that the countries concerned agree with China on its opposition to all forms of national separatism," Sun said.
