Annette Lu's Separatist Remarks Refuted in Macao

Over the past several days newspapers and scholars in Macao have strongly refuted the remarks of Annette Lu advocating the independence of Taiwan.

The Macao Daily News said in an editorial on April 16 that " there would be no peaceful days in the country without the eradication of those advocating Taiwan independence."

Annette Lu's absurd statements of "distant relatives and close neighbors" obliterated the history that Taiwan has been an inalienable part of the Chinese territory, and distorted the flesh- and-blood ties of the people across the Taiwan Straits, the editorial said.

Other local newspapers also noted that Annette Lu has stubbornly advocated the independence of Taiwan, and seems to walk farther along the notorious path, challenging all the Chinese people who are resolved to complete the reunification cause of the motherland.

Vong Fong Va, director of the Macao Chinese Education Association, said in an interview with Xinhua on Saturday that Annette Lu is merely driven by her political ambition and that her statements are more cheeky than the separatist remarks of Lee Teng- hui.

"She is making a bet on the security of the 23 million people in Taiwan," Vong Fong Va said, warning that Taiwan people should be highly alert to her actions.

Ieong Wan Chong, a professor with the University of Macao, also in an interview with Xinhua, said that reunification of the two sides of the Taiwan Straits is a major trend and the common aspiration of the Chinese people.

"The clamors of Annette Lu are only the last struggles of those advocating Taiwan independence and her actions are doomed to fail, " the scholar said.
