Revenue of China's Pharmaceutical Industry Up

The sales revenue of China's pharmaceutical industry grew 13.7 percent to reach 116.6 billion yuan in 1999, according to latest statistics from the bureau of pharmaceutical industry.

The profits of pharmaceutical plants across the country totaled 168 million yuan, 21 percent more than in the same period of 1998.

The 15 major pharmaceutical plants surveyed reported an average profit growth of 29.55 percent in November, 1999 higher than the national average.

The sales profit rate of the pharmaceutical industry in the western areas was higher than in the eastern areas, with the national average reaching seven percent in Jan-Nov 1999, a rise of 0.4 percentage point over the same period of 1998. The rate in the western area ran as high as 10.13 percent; that in the central area, 7.79 percent; that in the eastern area, 6.20 percent.

Meanwhile, the losses of pharmaceutical enterprises were reduced by a big margin in the Jan-Nov period of 1999, with the number of loss-making enterprises making up 35.2 percent of the country's total, 1.1 percentage points lower than in the same period of 1998.
