Imports Through Shanghai Port Soaring

Shanghai, China's largest foreign trade port which handles one fifth of the country's export and import products, handled imported goods worth 10.177 billion US dollars in the first three s of this year, up 74.1 percent over the same period last year.

According to Shanghai Customs, about 56 percent of the imports come from machinery and

electronics products, followed by paper pulp, synthetic fiber for textile industry, oil products,

plastics, steel and copper.

Customs sources said general trade imports jumped 66.4 percent, imports for processing

trade surged 69.9 percent, and equipment imports for foreign-funded enterprises rose 26.1

percent.

Meanwhile, exports of garments and textile products have witnessed brisk growth this year,

according to the customs. Exports of garments and their accessories hit 2.614 billion US

dollars in the first three months, up 37.8 percent.
