Center to Bolster Panda Protection

A giant panda research center which was established in Beijing Zoo on April 14 will contribute to China's campaign of panda protection, Xinhua News Agency quoted the Zoo Director Zong Ying.

The center will conduct gene research, and nutriological and physiological analysis to offer sound scientific support for the development of the pandas' non-habitat protection and reproduction.

With German-based Volkswagen Group's investment of 385,542 U.S. dollars, the center is to provide first-class environment for baby pandas growth until they are big enough to leave here, said Peng Zhenxin, director of the center.

Eight research projects are underway, and more than 20 researchers are expected to work at the facilities.

Because of environmental changes and human activities, it is believed that only about 1,000 wild pandas living in forests in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces.
