China's WTO Entry and Western Development: Hot Topics

At the recent Pacific Economic Cooperation Council conference in the Northeastern port city of Dalian, China's WTO entry and its western development program were two major topics of discussion among representatives from 24 Asia-Pacific countries and regions.

The representatives said that China's entry into the WTO as soon as possible would benefit both China and the rest of the world.

Peter Adams(New Zealand Ambassador to China)said: "It's very important for China to join the WTO as soon as possible. New Zealand was the first developed economy to reach a bilateral agreement with the Chinese government in about 1997. And we remain a very strong supporter of China's entry."

Rodrigo Querubin(Colombian Ambassador to China)said: "I think it will be good for China, and it'll be good for all of the world. China's entry into the WTO will have no doubt remaining that it's going to happen. We Colombians have supported it, and we'll continue to support it. And I'm sure no matter what happens this year, China will enter the WTO."

Christopher Findlay (PECC Coordinating Group Chairman)said: "China's entry into the WTO can not only be positive for world trade.

The representatives showed great interest in the development of West China.

Peter Adams said: "I have heard a lot about western development. And naturally this is, if this is an important priority for the Chinese government, an important matter for governments like New Zealand to consider."

Adams said that New Zealand has a lot of technical skills that are useful for the western part of China, in agriculture and forestry. And he hopes New Zealand can have more economic cooperation with the area.
