Education Tops Chinese Families' Expense: Survey

Education is now a major expense for most Chinese families, a recent survey on the importance of education shows.

About 43 percent said that education is now one of the biggest expenditures within the family, and about 60 percent said that they are going to apply a hefty amount of money toward educational purposes next year.

The survey was conducted by the Economy Watch Center of the National Bureau of Statistics among 502 residents in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, said Saturday's China Daily.

The rising importance of education for people, the increase of family income, and the reform of education system contributed to the survey's results, analyzed an official with the center.

The education fee in the college has sharply risen by 20 to 30 percent in recent years. And also, high-level education has become a prerequisite for a job in cities. Now, even college students are having a hard time finding a job.

About 70 percent of people in the survey said that investment in education is crucial for their future.

"People attribute more importance to education and are willing to pay more," said the official, and "the society also provides more paid education programs."
