China to Hold Information Science "Olympics"

The International Olympics of Information Science will be held in China from September 23 to 30, the first time the annual event has been scheduled in an Asian country.

As one of the international "Olympics" on scientific subjects for high school students that include mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and information science, the contest was initiated by the United Nations Education, Science and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1988.

Participants are given tasks involving the writing of computer programs, and the winners are often those who have superior ability to innovate and a good mastery of information science.

The information science contest will be sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the China Association for Science and Technology, the China National Natural Science Foundation, and other organizations.

Previously, China has sponsored the "Olympics" for mathematics, physics, and chemistry.
