World Bank and Hong Kong help Education in North ChinaDonations from the World Bank (WB) and Run Run Shaw, a well-known entrepreneur in Hong Kong, have greatly improved education in poverty-stricken areas in north China's Shanxi Province.The first donation 18.266 million US dollars by the World Bank has been allocated to twenty counties in building more than two million sq m of schools, buying more books for reading rooms and desks and chairs for students. The WB's second donation of 13 million US dollars together with 11.71 million US dollars from the Chinese government has given to eleven cities, 18 poor counties, and 11 normal schools to carry out the nine-year compulsory education programs and to improve the quality of teaching. The six donations by Shaw totaling 37.25 million Hong Kong dollars have been used to set up 20 middle schools, 31 primary schools and to rebuild a college in the province. Shanxi, a province with some 40 poverty-stricken counties, is one of the main places in the country to carry out the anti-poverty project. |
