Chinese Army Reaches World standards in Clearing Mines

Chinese army has reached international levels in clearing mines, according to army sources April 14.

This was confirmed by experts in Beijing from the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the United Nations who recently inspected and studied the results of two rounds of large-scale mine clearing operations carried out by the Chinese army along the Sino-Vietnamese border during 1992-99.

PLA troops have developed numerous methods and techniques to clear mines. They have cleared more than 600 square meters of landmines per day. So far, there have been no reports of casualties.

The 1,000-strong mine-clearing PLA troops suffered much less casualties during the maneuver compared with their foreign counterparts.

In 1999, China and the United Nations held an international training course for trainees from countries including Cambodia.
