China, Japan Build Flood Monitoring Information SystemChina and Japan have begun to launch an environment and flood monitoring information system in Beijing. The Science and Technology Daily reported that China and Japan have chosen to build a demonstration subsystem in central China's Hubei Province. The subsystem will be equipped with remote sensing, a global information system and high-tech telecommunication devices. Once the system is operational, it will provide effective monitoring and analysis of the floods and the environment of the country's major flood areas. Hubei Province is located along the Yangtze River, China's longest river where over 200 heavy floods occurred in the past 2, 000 years. On average, heavy floods hit river basin areas once every 10 years.
