China Making New Plan to Protect Water Resources

China is making a new plan to protect its water resources by strengthening regulation, the Ministry of Water Resources said in Beijing Friday.

The new plan will divide rivers and lakes into different categories and setting targets for the protection of water resources.

China will strive to improve the quality of water by curbing contamination and ceasing overuse of underground water, according to the plan.

In the 1980s, the ministry implemented rules for water resources protection. However, mounting pressures brought about by water shortage and pollution in the wake of rapid economic growth has prompted the government to implement new rules.
