China Steps Up Supervision Over Coalmine Safety

The Hunan Provincial Coalmine Safety Supervisory Bureau has been set up in Changsha, capital of Hunan province this week.

Late last year, the State Council decided to reinforce safety management in coalmines, by starting up a set of safety supervisory organizations directly under the central authorities. Safety supervisory offices will also be in place in different large and medium-sized coalmines.

Official statistics show that 665 people were killed in coalmine accidents in the first quarter of the year, 10 persons more from the same period last year.

Establishment of the new coalmine safety supervisory bureaus in 16 provinces will be completed later this month, and coalmine safety supervisory offices will go into operation as of the end of June.
