"One China Principle" Unshakable: Army Daily

Tomorrow's People's Liberation Army Daily will carry a bylined article refuting Annette Lu's pro-Taiwan independence remarks.

The cross-straits relationship was at a turning point after Taiwan's new leaders were elected last month, it says, adding that at this crucial moment, Annette Lu has perversely advocated Taiwan independence, which sends a dangerous signal and foolishly challenges the one-China principle.

"All officers and soldiers of the People's Liberation Army and armed police are paying close attention to her remarks," it says.

In a recent interview with a Hong Kong cable TV, Annette Lu openly supported independence for Taiwan, spreading the air that " No one can deny Taiwan has independent sovereignty."

Lu also said that the relationship between the mainland and Taiwan is historically one of "distant relatives," and geographically they are nothing more than "close neighbors."

The article also points out that it is clear to everyone that she is a traitor who has lost all feelings of loyalty and respect for her motherland, and her actions are unforgivable.

Anyone with knowledge of Chinese history knows that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, and Taiwan compatriots are family members of the motherland.

Taiwan people are Chinese and the people at the two sides of the Taiwan Straits belong to one family -- they are not merely "relatives" or "neighbors," stresses the article.

"A part of China's ancestors moved to the island of Taiwan, worked hard on the land and fought bravely against invaders, which are facts commonly acknowledged by all the world," it says.

Though the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China have different political views, they all recognize the one-China principle.

"Annette Lu takes for granted that the Taiwan election can change the reality that Taiwan is a part of China, and yet she has ignored the fact and is pursuing a road to Taiwan independence that leads to a dead end."

Peaceful reunification is the common wish of the people across the straits. "To realize this goal, no one can waver from the one-China principle," the article stresses.

"Anyone who shakes off the one-China principle has tampered with the bottom line of peaceful reunification," warns the article.

It notes that Lu's fallacious remarks had the same aim as Lee Tung-hui's "state-to-state relations" remarks, both attempting to challenge the one-China principle.

All people should yield to historical trend on the matter of Taiwan. "We warn anyone who advocates Taiwan independence, including Annette Lu, that Lee Tung-hui's separatist stance will lead to a dead end," says the article.

If Annette Lu and other people who share her beliefs underestimate the Chinese people's determination and the People's Liberation Army's strength to resolve the Taiwan issue and put the welfare of the 23 million Taiwan people at stake, the consequences will be disastrous, it says.

Taiwan independence means war. "Anyone who pays no heed to this important information from us and insists on Taiwan independence will push Taiwan into the abyss of war and bring disaster to the Taiwan people," the article concludes.
