"Taiwan Independence" Doomed to Fail: Non-Communist PartiesTwo major non-Communist parties in China lodged harsh criticism April 13 against Annette Lu of Taiwan for her recent remarks advocating "independence" of the island."Separatist forces angered the entire Chinese people, and are doomed to fail," spokesmen for the Taiwan Democratic Self- Government League (TDSGL) and the Jiu San (September 3) Society said in separate statements. Members of the TDSGL are mostly Taiwan natives residing on the mainland, the TDSGL spokesman said. "Our parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends live there, but we cannot get together because of man-made reasons." He stressed that the reunification of the motherland has been the common desire of all the Chinese people, including the Taiwan compatriots. The Jiu San (September 3) Society is composed mainly of senior and middle ranking intellectuals in the scientific and technological circles in China. The spokesman for the society said that Taiwan has been an inalienable part of China since ancient times, and the people across the Taiwan Straits are members of the same family. In a recent interview with Hong Kong Cable TV, Annette Lu openly advocated "independence of Taiwan", which challenged the one-China principle and stirred animosity between the people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits. The spokesman for the society said that the civil war dating back to the 1940's has resulted in the current hostility between the two sides across the straits; only after the civil war ends can the hostility cease and the nation be reunified. Both spokesmen said their parties resolutely support the statement made by the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council on this matter on April 8, which stressed that "China will by no means compromise or give in" on the one-China principle |
