China Sets up Agency to Promote E-commerceThe China International Commerce Commission established a subgroup to promote e-commerce.Headed by Chen Wei, vice-director of China Merchants Bank, the China E-Commerce Commission will enhance communication between companies and the government. It will also co-ordinate agreements to develop on-line shopping. "But since many of our merchants don't really know what e-commerce is or the opportunities it provides, we may also launch an education campaign," Chen said. For Li Jun, chairman of the board of the Intec International Group Ltd and a consultant to the commission, the founding of the new group means new momentum for e-commerce. "We now no longer need to do e-commerce via one individual company or single trade," he said. "Various trades can work together, drawing more of the government's attention and promoting related legislative work." Legal work is a must, Li added. "While a legal vacuum might be good for the initial stages of development , it will doubtlessly be harmful in later stages," he said. "Therefore, we would like to help the government build a legal network for our country's e-commerce." The e-commerce commission's first members come mainly from banks, industry and trade companies. Chen said more specialized e-commerce enterprises will come aboard the commission later to work with the other members. |
