Telephones to Be Popular in Rural Area of Fujian

East China's Fujian Province is making effort to provide 98 percent of its 15,000 villages with access to telephone by the end of this year.

In recent years, the province has carried out a series of key telecommunications projects to erect phone lines to 92.5 percent of its villages.

According to a provincial telecommunications department official, by the end of the third quarter this year, the provincial government will invest 60 million yuan (about 7.23 million US dollars) to open telephone service in 110 villages in remote poverty-stricken areas.

"This will allow us to bring the economic development as well as technological priorities to most villages," the official said.

Although telecommunications in the province's urban areas have experienced a booming era in recent years, the rural areas are still rather backward, the official said.
