10th Anniversary of Pudong's Opening HailedThe People's Daily publishes a commentary March 14 to mark the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Pudong New Area, Shanghai, in east China.The development and opening of Pudong has "deepened reforms and further opened up China to the outside world," according to the paper. Deng Xiaoping is quoted as saying during a visit in Shanghai that although Pudong is a latecomer in the reform campaign, "I believe it will surpass other economic zones in the country." After 10 years of development, Pudong has witnessed fast urbanization, taking the lead in developing a market economy, and making consistent efforts to cooperate with international market. One of outstanding features of Pudong's development is, according to the paper, that for the past decade, Pudong has adhered to opening to both the rest of the country and the world, an effective way to success in utilizing both domestic and foreign resources, talent and capital. Priority has been given to building infrastructure projects and developing financial, trade and hi-tech industries in Pudong, while attention has been paid to cultural advance. Pudong has pioneered a series of reforms including open bidding for construction projects and government procurement to curb corruption, which is also proven successful, the paper says. Shanghai's experience in developing and opening up Pudong over the past decade will continue to play a guiding role for Pudong's development in the next ten years and provide a model for developing China western regions, it says.
