First Int'l Iron and Steel Meeting in 2000 to Be Held in ChinaThe preparatory work for the 2000 China Iron and Steel Meeting has now entered the count down period. The organizing committee disclosed that more than 200 domestic and overseas iron and steel enterprises have signed up for the gathering. The number of participants is expected to exceed 300.Wu Jianchang, chairman of the organizing committee and deputy director of State Metallurgical Industry Bureau, said on April 13 that the world's iron and steel industry will commonly face the problems about the prospect and the development of said industry and how enterprises will meet challenges in the new century. This year's meeting will list the study on the development strategy for domestic and overseas iron and steel industry and enterprises as the key topic for discussion. This is of special significance under the situation of the rapid economic, scientific and technological development. Wu Jianchang said that, from a strategic height concerning China's march from a strong iron and steel country to an iron and steel power at the turn of the century and the development of the global iron and steel industry, this year's meeting will explore such major subjects relating to the development of iron and steel industry, including the macro-environment, economic policy, the development of varieties, market change, online transactions, environmental protection, investment and raising of funds. It is reported that the "2000 China Iron and Steel Meeting", scheduled for May in Beijing, will consist of seven sub-meetings respectively on the development strategy of the iron and steel industry, on iron-smelting technology, steel-making technology, continuous casting technology, hot- rolling technology, cold-rolling and coating technology and metallurgical automation technology. By then, nearly 30 related famous experts and leaders will take the floor. Wu also said that the primary task of China's iron and steel industry is to vigorously improve the structure, expedite the development and innovation of science and technology, strengthen enterprise management and enhance the international competitiveness of China's iron and steel industry.
