China to Host Intl. Singing Contest

China will hosted a major international vocal music contest from November 8-17 in this capital of Guangdong Province.

The ten-day event, the first of its kind in China, is aimed to promote exchanges between music circles and develop the art of vocal music, according to an official with the Ministry of Culture. The panel of judges to be headed by well-known Chinese singer Guo Shuzhen will include a dozen other artists from China, Romania, the United States, Britain, Germany and Australia.

Singers between ages 18-32 worldwide are eligible to participate in the contest, which will be jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and the provincial government of Guangdong, the official said.

A number of prizes will be awarded, including one exclusively for Chinese songs. The event will be held every two years in the future.
