AA Expects New Services to ChinaAmerican Airlines expects to gain approval from the US government for a combined passenger and freight service on 10 new flights a week between the United States and China beginning in 2001, said the American Airlines chairman and chief executive officer Don Carty Thursday.American, a unit of Fort Worth, Texas-based AMR Corp., is competing against Delta Airlines, United Parcel Service of America and Polar Air Cargo for the new routes. All hope to join United Airlines, Northwest Airlines and Federal Express as US carriers with landing rights in China. Carty said the carrier plans to fly daily nonstop between Chicago and Shanghai Pudong, and three times a week nonstop between Chicago and Beijing International. Passengers will be able to travel to other Chinese destinations through a partnership agreement with China Eastern Airlines. The US Department of Transport is expected to make a decision on an approved carrier soon to enable flights to begin April 1, 2001, when a bilateral aviation agreement granting the extra landing rights takes effect. "We would expect to make a profit (on the China route) very promptly, by the end of the first year," Carty said.
