Beijing Steps Up Treatment of Garbage

The second phase of Beijing's largest waste landfill site in the northern part of the city is under construction. Upon its completion next year, the landfill will be able to bury over two thousand tons of garbage a day.

The landfill has four impermeable layers to prevent pollutants in the garbage from contaminating ground water. When the site is full, it will be covered with soil and have trees and shrubs planted on it.

Beijing generates nearly five million tons of wastes and garbage annually. The four large landfills and four transfer stations in the city play an important role in safely disposing of this garbage.

So far, burying garbage still dominates waste disposal in Beijing. Eighty percent of these wastes can be degenerated to a harmless state.
