Foreign Minister Meets with Head of UNTAET

Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan April 13 met with Sergio Vieira De Mello, Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Head of UNTAET. The two sides exchanged views on issues such as the situation in East Timor, the work of UNTAET, the role of the UN, etc.

Foreign Minister Tang expressed the view that the Chinese government and people have always paid close attention to the stability and reconstruction of East Timor and provided East Timor assistance within its capacity. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China supports the active role played by the UN in solving the East Timor question and the work of UNTAET and has actively participated in the peace-keeping and reconstruction work sponsored by the UN in East Timor. The Chinese side hopes that the people of East Timor can live a peaceful and normal life at an early date.

De Mello spoke highly of the active role played by China in helping East Timor to realize stability and reconstruct its economy. De Mello thanked the Chinese side for its substantial support to UNTAET and expressed the willingness to further strengthen its cooperation with the Chinese side in various areas.

De Mello arrived in Beijing on 13th April for a visit at the invitation of the Chinese Government.
