China's E-Commerce Will No Longer Wait

When TCL Information Technology Industry Group published its strategic development plan, nobody would say that the group's General Manager Wu Shihong is repeating the same old thing of others' "marching toward internet". Just as an expert here has said that with the beginning of April 2000, that "practical" part of China's E-Commerce is advancing onto the front stage.

After a period of enlightenment, the Chinese today are not at all lagging behind the Westerners in their concept about internet. However, due to our lagging in "infrastructure facilities", we are at most time in a waiting state.

--The internet potential users are waiting for convenient, easy-to-use and cheap hardware and software, waiting for the lowering of online charge, and waiting for rich and practical contents;

--Internet service providers are waiting, waiting for increase in the width of web bands and for adjustment in telecom charge;

--E-Commerce operators are waiting, waiting for progress in online paying means, for the protection and authentication of web security, and for the perfection of the material circulation and distribution systems.

The involvement of large household electrical appliances enterprises such as TCL has enormously shortened the waiting time at least in the following three aspects. The 5 million TV sets sold annually, after slightly remodeled, can easily go online. The price for each of such "two-purposes" machine will not be raised too much; The household electrical appliances sales network, possessing a staff of nearly 10,000 persons, 31 branch companies, more than 3,000 monopoly stores and over 20,000 sales agents, has completed the electronization of the processing and settlement of orders, it can deliver any commodities to most of the country's provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions within 24 hours; the establishment of websites makes it possible not only to provide a lot of commodity information, but also collect information about the internet users' demands, goods are thus organized immediately.

In the opinion of Li Dongsheng, president of TCL Group, the business expansion of such traditional household electrical appliances enterprises represents a signal, indicating that China's E-Commerce is changing its slogan into pragmatic action.

In fact, such a change is under way in many other fields. In the first half of April, online bookstore put forward the concept of "Mouse plus Cement", this means closely integrating online sales with the distribution of books in the real physical space. Having a look at the list of the company's new management team, people will discover that the chief information inspector comes from the world's most famous publisher, the chief inspector of operation comes from China's largest civilian-run bookstore and the chief inspector of overseas market business development comes from China International Trade Corporation,, its integration with traditional business is thus clear.

With regard to online payment, in November last year, Merchants Bank became the first bank formally approved by the People's Bank of China to develop online business. According to Wan Jianhua, its vice-present in charge of commerce, by the end of this March, the number of online banking business enterprises had reached 4,127, with 58,000 individual users and business turnover hitting 114 billion yuan. Banks providing E-Commerce service are themselves becoming the largest E-Commerce operators. Wan Jianhua predicts that perhaps all existing banking websites will disappear in less than 10 years, and in their place will be a variety of internet insertion terminals, such as computers and mobile phones.
