China-Russia Railway Line Good for Northeast Asia Economy

Another railway line has opened linking Hunchun in northeast China's Jilin Province and Makhalino in Russia.

The new line will boost the economy in the Tumen River Delta area, where China, Russia, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea meet, and accelerate cooperation and exchange among the northeast Asian countries, said local officials.

The railway line will make it easier and faster for China to transport cargo to Japan, Republic of Korea, and North America by first transporting them to the Russian ports through Makhalino station.

The United Nations Development Program allocated 30 billion U.S. dollars in 1991 for the Tumen River Project, with the aim to set up another international cargo transportation hub, and an trading and processing center in northeast Asia.

China has invested more than 4 billion yuan (about US$ 480 million) in the Project for infrastructure construction.
