Chinese Universities Facing Management Challenges: ExpertChinese universities are now facing the new challenges of management, said Peter West, president of the Directing Group of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Program on Institutional Management in Higher Education (IMHE).He made these remarks at the opening ceremony of the International Seminar on Changing Patterns in University Management in Beijing at Qinghua University. He said, in a very brief review of Chinese universities, that he has seen several examples of areas where they already display the characteristics of successful entrepreneurial universities. "If the new era is a threat to some, it is an opportunity for others, including the universities of China." A university must be excellent at boundary scanning, reading the signals of new developments in teaching and learning, in information technology, in emerging fields of applied research, and in funding opportunities from industry, international research programs, and donations. West said there is ample evidence that Chinese universities are positioning themselves to play in the first division of this new game. He said the new relations established in the educational reform between universities and their local governments will greatly benefit the development of universities.
