Macao to Host Golf Competition in Mid-MayA total of 202 golfers from around the world will compete in the Macao Open to be held from May 11 to 14 at the Macao Golf and Country Club, a local sports official said at a press conference on Wednesday.The Macao Open will be the sixth leg of the 2000 Davidoff Tour of Asian Professional Golfers' Association (PGA). The first place check is worth 32,300 U.S. dollars and the total prize money adds up to 200,000 U.S. dollars. Great golfers such as last year's Order of Merit winner Kyi Hla Han of Myanmar and Taiwan's Yeh Wei-tze, winner of the season- opening Benson & hedges Malaysian Open, will be present at the Macao Open. "Over the past two years we have been very fortunate to watch some of the world's greatest golfers play in the Macao Open and I am delighted to reveal that this year will be no exception," Manuel Silverio, president of the Macao Sports Development Board, said at the press conference. He also announced that Mark O'Meara, a noted golfer of the Untied States, will come to the Macao Open. Mark has played in five Ryder Cup matches and won the British Open and U.S. Masters in 1998. The 43-year-old American was in action in Asia last year partnering Tiger Woods to victory in the World Cup in Malaysia, but the Macao Open will mark the first time he has played on the Davidoff Tour. "Macao is a wonderful destination for golfers and I am sure that Mark, like the stars who have played here before, will give it his seal of approval when he arrives here next month," Manuel Silverio said. Englishman Lee Westwood triumphed in Macao last year after beating American Andrew Pitts in a sudden-death play-off. Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke also starred alongside Westwood.
