Teacher-training Project Launched in West China

For the nearly 300 million inhabitants of China's western region, there are one million teachers. Educational experts think the number is too low to spur future development.

The latest statistics show as many as one fifth of them are unqualified for their jobs.

China's education authorities started the training project Wednesday in an attempt to turn the situation around.

Over the next three years, the Education Ministry will send professional educators to numerous cities and towns in the west to help boost the quality of teachers.

The project will also establish one thousand model schools out of the primary and high schools in the 10 western provinces and autonomous regions.
