Chinese Vice-President Meets Madagascar Guests

Vice-President Hu Jintao said in Beijing on April 12 that China is pleased with the growth of its relations with Madagascar.

Hu, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remark during a meeting with a delegation of the Party of Action for Madagascar's Renaissance led by its National Secretary Pierrot Rajaonarivelo.

Extending a welcome to the delegation on behalf of the CPC, Hu, who visited Madagascar in early 1999, said he became acquainted with Rajaonarivelo and other friends at hand, and was very happy to meet Rajaonarivelo again in Beijing.

He noted that bilateral relations have been developing continuously since the forging of diplomatic ties in 1972, and that an exchange of high-level visits have been frequent, while bilateral cooperation in a variety of areas has been expanding. Bilateral relations based on sincere friendship, equality, and mutual benefit have had a steady momentum for development and China was delighted over this, he said.

Hu went on to say that the CPC places great importance on its relations with the Party of Action for Madagascar's Renaissance, because both parties are in power, the growing exchanges and the learning between the two are conducive to the growth of their respective parties and countries, and also helps to promote the further growth of bilateral relations.

Rajaonarivelo, who is also Madagascar's deputy prime minister, said he and other members of his delegation have during the visit felt the firm leadership of the CPC and witnessed for themselves the achievements China has made in its reform and opening-up drive. This proves Madagascar's correctness in adhering to the one China policy, he said, noting that there is only one China, and Taiwan is a province of China. He also congratulated the Chinese government on the resumption of the exercise of sovereignty over Macao in late December last year.

China's development experience proves that the viewpoint of China, and of a large number of developing countries, that human rights are first the right to subsistence and development, is correct, he said. Madagascar will continue to support China in this respect.

Speaking highly of China's efforts to promote Sino-African friendship and Sino-Madagascar cooperation, he said that China's assistance to his nation in recent years has set a good example for South-to-South cooperation, which was initiated by China. Moreover, he said Madagascar wishes to see even greater development of South-to-South cooperation, and he expressed his belief that Sino-Madagascar cooperation will be further expanded.
