U.N. Sets Eyes on Drought in Horn of Africa

World Food Program (WFP) Chief Catherine Bertini left Rome Tuesday to begin a trip to four Horn of Africa countries seriously affected by drought, a U.N. spokesman said.

Bertini, as a special envoy of U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, starts with a visit to Ethiopia Wednesday and she is expected to end her mission on April 19 before touring Djibouti, Eritrea and Kenya.

According to the WFP, an estimated 16 million people are at risk of food insecurity or famine due to prolonged drought in the Horn of Africa.
