China NGO Representative Calls for Protection of Women's Human Rights

A Chinese Non-governmental Organization (NGO) representative Tuesday called on the United Nations Commission on Human Rights to do more to promote and protect women's human rights.

"At present, there are too many cases of inadequate protection and violations of women's human rights across the world," said Song Wenyan, a representative of the All-China Women's Federation, at the 56th session of the commission.

She told the meeting held specially on women's rights that many women in China, as a result of practicing "Falun Gong", had killed themselves or died due to their refusal to seek medical treatment for their illness.

"As a representative from a women's NGO in China, I wish to inform the House that the harm done by the evil cult has shocked all Chinese people, including all Chinese women."

She hoped that more would be done to empower women, improve their status and strive for the advancement of women at a time when some Chinese women have been taken away by the evil cult " Falun Gong" from participating economic activities, public affairs, and decision making, which are all strongly advocated and promoted by the United Nations and the international community including NGOs.

Song also pointed out that a representative from the Freedom House lied to the meeting on April 7 about the number of "Falun Gong" practitioners.

"She said that according to official statistics, there are 70 million to 100 million "Falun Gong" practitioners in China," Song said. "I wish to know who is the 'official' she referred to, which country this 'official' belongs to."

"According to my knowledge, the number she gave was a sheer fabrication by the cult's founder Li Hongzhi, with an intention to exaggerate the power he had," Song said.

"In fact, there are no more than two million 'Falun Gong' practitioners all over China. What the representative from Freedom House said last Friday was all fabricated," Song said
