HK to Chair PECC Meeting in Dalian

William Fung, chairman of the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (HKCPEC), will lead the Hong Kong delegation to attend the Standing Committee meeting of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) scheduled for April 13 and 14 in the northeast China city of Dalian.

Fung will chair the Standing Committee meeting (SC), the first since Hong Kong assumed the PECC chairmanship in October 1999. The SC meeting provides a good opportunity for "setting a clear direction for the PECC's work in 2000 and beyond," a HKCPEC spokesman said.

The SC meeting will discuss, among other issues, the PECC's trade policy agenda, initiatives for strengthening the financial markets and corporate governance, and capacity building initiatives for developing economies.

To further cultivate the PECC's relationship with other international economic and trade organizations, representatives from Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and the Pacific Basin Economic Council have been invited to attend the meeting. The PECC is a non-governmental organization set up in 1980 with the purpose of developing closer cooperation among economies in the region on trade and economic policy issues. Currently, it has 24 member committees.
