Group-77 Backs Reducing North-South Technological Gap

The Group of 77 (G-77) called Monday for reducing the scientific and technological gap between rich and poor countries, and the adopting of mechanisms favoring transfers in both fields.

G-77 held a closed-door meeting of senior officials from its 133 member states at the end of a brief opening session of the South Summit.

"The process of quick accumulation of knowledge and technologies hasn't gotten to hundreds of millions of persons that keep on living in absolute poverty", said the group in its draft Joint Declaration published Monday.

Southern Summit of the Group of 77 will take place from April 12 to 14 in Havana with the participation of heads of State or government of member countries.

Group-77 said it commits itself to the promoting of scientific and technological development with an increase in resources, the developing of an adequate institutional framework, including the achieving of quality and advanced education.

"We're exhorting developed countries to facilitate a technological transfer easing costs and colateral conditions hindering it", the document said.
