U.N. Calls for Global Efforts to Counter Global CrimesThe United Nations called for global efforts Monday to deal with the increase in global crime. U.N. Deputy Secretary General Louise Frechette told the 10th U. N. Conference on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders that it was more important than ever to unite governments, professional crime fighters, and other key players in law enforcement to combat criminal opportunities created by globalization."If criminals are going global, those authorities fighting them must also launch a global effort and create effective networks for technical, legal and judicial cooperation, or they will always be one step behind," she said. While globalization has had many positive effects, Frechette said, some people have "jumped on the bandwagon of globalization to create transnational criminal networks, and so boost profits from a wide range of illegal activities. "To them, opening borders means it is easier to traffic in women and children for forced labor and prostitution, to smuggle drugs and arms, and to escape prosecution," she said. Some 2,000 government officials and experts are attending the meeting, which will end next Monday. |
