Asia Development Bank Applauds Plan to Develop Western China

The vice president of the Asia Development Bank (ADB) said on April 10 that the Chinese government 's efforts to upgrade infrastructure in western China will play a key role in developing the country's backward areas.

Peter Sullivan told an international seminar that the Chinese government can develop a central budgetary system that will accelerate the development of western China.

Noting that the Chinese government's program is fully consistent with ADB's poverty reduction strategy, he said that ADB will put more of its projects in western China.

At present, two-thirds of ADB funded projects in China are located in central and western areas.

The International Workshop on Fiscal Policy and Regional Development was sponsored by the Ministry of Finance. Over 100 government officials from China and other countries, officials from ADB, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and OECD and experts from research institutions attended.
