Mugabe Wants Speedy Deployment of U.N. Observers in CongoZimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has said the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and its allies would like to see a speedy deployment of United Nations observers in the DRC to ensure that peace prevail in the giant central African country.Speaking after the presidents from the DRC, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Angola held a closed-door consultation to review the DRC peace process in Kinshasa on Sunday, Mugabe said the U.N. force should be deployed as soon as possible to prevent resumption of war, according to a report reaching Monday "We all hope that the U.N. is going to dispatch the observer group as soon as possible and that is absolutely important because without that group and without the part of the U.N. there is a danger that the situation will be reversed to that point where we started, that is the war will once again be resumed," he said. The U.N. Security Council endorsed on February 24 the deployment of 500 military observers and 5,000 military personnel to protect them in the DRC to oversee the ceasefire agreement signed in Lusaka last July and August by all warring parties in the conflict. Zimbabwe, Namibia and Angola sent troops to support DRC president Laurent Kabila to defend the rebels backed by Uganda and Rwanda forces. After the summit, Mugabe and his delegation were expected to proceed to France en route to Cuba for the G77 Summit. |
