Sharp Increase in Number of Taiwanese Traveling in HK and Macao

According to statistics from the department concerned, the number of Taiwanese coming in and out of Hong Kong reached 5.9 million, 0.58 million more than in 1998, a. 10 percent rise; and the number of Taiwanese traveling in Macao reached 1.72 million, 0.33 million more than that in 1998, or a 23.7 percent increase.

The statistics also show that the number of Taiwanese travelers in Macao doubled that in 1996. Since the Macao Airport opened the flight from Macao to Taiwan, the number of Taiwanese travelers to and from Macao has rapidly increased, and the majority of them visit relatives, travel or do business in the mainland via Macao.
