Hong Kong leads Kazakstan in Davis Cup

Hong Kong, China, took a 2-1 lead in Hong Kong Saturday by winning the doubles in straight sets on the second day of the playoff in the 2000 Asia/Oceania Zone Group II for the Davis Cup tennis tournament.

Following a 1-1 draw in the first two singles held on Friday, Chris Numbers and Melvin Tong won the crucial double point for host Hong Kong.

After keeping their serves to 5-5, the host duo broke Alexei Kedruyk and Pave Baranov's serve in the 11th game and won the first set 7-5.

The second set saw the two pairs broke one game each and in the decider the Kazakstan players saved two set points before losing the set 7-6 (8-6).

Cheered by the local crowds, Numbers and Tong continued their winning streak by clinching the easy third set at 6-1 with their volley skills.

The two sides will play the last two reverse singles on Sunday in the best-of-five competition.
