China Setting up First Sapling Breeding Base

China is speeding up the building of its first tree breeding base in the Yellow River Delta area, east China's Shandong Province.

With a total investment of 58.1 million yuan (about 7 million U. S. dollars), the project is expected to turn out more than 50 million saplings annually and generate over 16.7 million yuan (2 million U.S. dollars) in profits.

Up to now, an improved sapling breeding base covering 33.3 hectares and a sapling cultivation greenhouse with a floor space of 13,000 sq m have been completed. The project has also completed the grafting of 900,000 winter date trees and 500,000 black walnut trees.

Experts say that the saplings bred in the base are more suitable to north China region, especially on saline-alkali soil and muddy coastal land.

The Yellow River Delta is one of the country's three biggest river deltas, and boasts plentiful petroleum and gas resources.
