Defending Champions Shandong Goes Top

Defending champions Shandong Luneng went to top on the Chinese first division soccer league standings table as they scored an emphatic 3-0 home victory over Shengyang Haishi under torrential rain on Sunday.

Chinese international marksman Su Maozhen struck twice on a soggy home ground to bring the visiting Haishi to their first defeat this season. Shangdong, on the back of a hat-trick wins under the guidance of former Yugoslavian national coach Slobodan Santrac, tallied nine points from four games to occupy the top position.

Following behind only by goal difference were the newly- promoted Yunnan Hongta, who saw off Jilin Aodong 2-0 for their third win out of four games. Tianjin Taida, starting this round of action as league leaders, went down to the third after playing a 1- 1 tie with last season's runners-up Liaoning Fushun.

Beijing Guo'an, suspended their Yugoslavian manager Milovan Djoric this week following a three-game losing streak and consequential bottom position, finally managed one point by forcing out a goalless draw with Sichuan Quanxing.

Shenzhen Ping'an, still recovering from a prostitute scandal which involved six of their players partying with call girls all night after a league defeat, posted a morale-boosting 2-0 win over Qingdao Hainiu.

Elsewhere, Chongqing Longxin tied with Shanghai Shenghua 0-0 while Dalian Shide downed Xiamen Xiaxin 2-0.
