Singapore Premier Starts China Visit

Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong arrived in Beijing on April 9 for an 11-day official visit to China. Goh is visiting at the invitation of Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, whom he is to meet along with President Jiang Zemin.

A statement from Goh's office in Singapore earlier Sunday said the talks would be aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two countries.

Last week, Goh said relations between China and Taiwan not only decided the stability of the mainland, but also of East Asia.

Goh also made it clear that there was no change in Singapore's "one China" policy and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.

Goh said he also wanted to learn more about China's economic plans.

Singapore is a leading source of foreign investment in China.

Apart from Beijing, Goh is set to visit Xi'an, Qingdao, Shanghai and Hong Kong.
