China Protest Against US Arms Sales to Taiwan

Vice Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on April 8 morning summoned James Moriarty, a US Embassy official to his office and, on behalf of the Chinese government, lodged a strong protest against the US Government's announcement to sell advanced weapons and military equipment to Taiwan. Yang said that the United States disregarded strong opposition on the part of the Chinese Government and announced that it will go ahead with plans to sell significant amounts of advanced military equipment and weapons to Taiwan.

This erroneous practice seriously violates the three Sino-U.S. Joint Communiques, especially the August 17 Communique, Yang said. It is a gross interference in China's internal affairs and an encroachment on Chinese sovereignty and territorial integrity. Additionally, it will further intensify tensions across the Taiwan Straits, and cause severe damage to Sino-US relations.

Yang reiterated that there is only one China in the world, of which Taiwan is an inalienable part. The international community, including the United States, generally acknowledges that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government of China.

Finally, Yang pointed out that the Chinese government and the Chinese people are determined to maintain state sovereignty. The improvement and development of Sino-US relations can only be established on the basis of the three joint communiques.
