Article refutes Annette Lu's statements on "Taiwan independence"

Xinhua News Agency Friday issued a commentator's article strongly refuting Annette Lu's statements advocating "Taiwan independence" when she was interviewed by a Hong Kong cable TV station on April 2.

Lu is a member of the Taiwan-based Democratic Progressive Party.

In the interview, Lu repeated her argument that the relationship between the mainland and Taiwan should be called a " remote relative and close neighbor", that is to say, because the ancestors of the Taiwan people came from the mainland, Taiwan is the mainland's historical "distant cousin" when consanguinity is considered; and when geographical factors are considered, their relationship is merely that of a "close neighbor".

The article says that the allegation is aimed at denying the fact that Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory, and that the people of Taiwan are an inseparable part of the Chinese nation.

The article says that whoever attempts to change the situation that Taiwan is part of China by using any means whatsoever is simply daydreaming.

Lu also held that the people of Taiwan are scapegoats from the civil war between Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China, and that the formation of the Taiwan issue arose from the confrontation between the two parties after Kuomintang withdrew to Taiwan. Since the Kuomintang has now ended its rule, Taiwan should pursue the goal of independence, she alleged.

The article points out that the temporary separation between Taiwan and the mainland will inevitably come to an end. Taiwan has been part of China under the Kuomintang's rule, and it will still be part of China under the rule of any other party or person.

Anybody attempting to take advantage of the Kuomintang's step- down to carry out a "Taiwan independence" policy is doomed to fail, the article says.

Lu did not forget to use the camouflage of "communications with the mainland", but anybody with common sense can find out that she is cheating the public, the article says.

It continues to point out that her attempt to reach the goal of "realizing Taiwan independence through peaceful means" by playing tricks is just her own wishful thinking.

The article restates the Chinese government's policy that it will never negotiate with any party or person who advocates " Taiwan independence", and will never give people pursuing "Taiwan independence" any chance to realize their dream.

Lu is cheating the people, and first of all, she is cheating the Taiwan people, the article says.

It says that Lu has over-estimated herself, and underestimated the Chinese nation's resolution and will to safeguard state sovereignty and territorial integrity.

It stresses that the China will adhere to the One China principle without wavering in any circumstances or at any time.
