Township Economy Key to Special Economic Zone

Farmers in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province in south China, might be the richest in China. Eighty percent of their income comes from township businesses.

The per capita farmer's yearly income in Shenzhen averaged 8, 310 yuan last year, leading the way in Guangdong which has witnessed rapid economic growth in China.

There are a total of 57,556 township firms in Shenzhen. They earned 28 billion yuan worth of output value last year.

Mainly engaged in processing trade, Shenzhen's township businesses are especially appealing to foreign investment with six billion U.S. dollars of foreign investment spent in the past 20 years. Foreign companies have set up 891 joint ventures in rural Shenzhen.
