Heavy Snow Closes Airport in Northeast China

The airport in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province, was closed on April 7 morning because of a heavy snow that hit the city yesterday evening.

Strong winds and rain appeared on Thursday afternoon, followed later by snow in the evening, said Zhu Qiwen, head of the provincial meteorological observatory.

Zhu said it is rare to see such a heavy snow in the city in early April, and the snowfall is continuing.

Airport officials said flights from the airport to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and other cities were postponed, as the staff remains busy cleaning the snow from the runways.

Sources also said that all railways and expressways in the province are open, and no serious traffic accidents have been reported so far.
