Hangzhou to clean up West LakeThe West Lake, a major tourist attraction in this capital city of east China's Zhejiang Province, will soon become clearer. The local government said that the problem of pollutants from rivers entering the upper reaches of the lake, namely the Changqiao, Chishan, Longhong and Jinsha rivers, will be solved by the end of this year. This tourist city will invest more than 200 million yuan to dredge alluvia silt from the lake. When the project is completed, the average depth of the lake water is expected to increase from the current 1.65 meters to 2.15 meters. Rubbish and polluted water will be banned from entering the lake, illegal housing will be dismantled, and trees and grass will be planted within a margin of ten meters from the lake water. |
