Artificial Cardia Transplant Successful in Shanghai

A hospital in Shanghai has successfully transplanted artificial cardia, an opening connecting the esophagus and the upper part of the stomach, into six patients who had had their cardia removed.

These are believed to be the first such operations in China, and the operation is expected to become a procedure for treating diseases such as esophageal reflux and fistula, which result from cardia removal.

The No. 9 People's Hospital affiliated to the No. 2 Medical Sciences University developed the artificial cardia with metallic and macromolecule materials and transplanted them in the process of linking the esophagus with the stomach.

The cardia serves as a kind of valve to prevent the refulgence of stomach contents into the esophagus.
