China's First Test-Tube Quintuplets Born in Shanxi

Test-tube quintuplets were born at 8:00 Wednesday morning at a hospital in Taiyuan, the capital of north China's Shanxi Province, the first such multiple births in China.

The two boy members of the quintuplets have died of dyspnea and the three girls are suffering from the problem of underdeveloped lungs, while the 35-year old mother is in good condition at the Shanxi Provincial People's Hospital, doctors said.

The mother of the quints had been infertile due to a medical condition, but succeeded in becoming pregnant last September after the use of the test-tube method.

The infants were premature, born after 30 weeks of pregnancy, said a doctor at the hospital, adding that all the infants had a lung problem at birth.

The mother and three surviving girls are receiving the best nursing and medical care at the hospital.
