Poll Shows Residents' Confidence in Macao SAR GovtA recent poll showed that the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government has been able to win the confidence of local residents over the past three months. Asked about their overall impression on the first policy address delivered by the SAR's chief executive at the Macao Legislative Council last week, 6.9 percent of those polled said they were "extremely satisfied," 42.6 percent uttered "fair satisfaction" and 38.6 percent said "OK."Organized by an assistant professor with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the University of Macao, the poll was conducted by a group of students of the faculty on March 31 and April 1 and 2. The students made 5,365 phone calls, of which 2,536 were answered. And 1,035 people turned out to be qualified respondents. The phone numbers had been selected randomly with the help of computers. Responding to the question of "what aspect in the policy address are you concerned about most," 44.5 percent of those surveyed gave the answer of "economic development" and 24.1 percent mentioned "public security." The results indicated that public security in Macao has been improved since the founding of the SAR last December. Local residents used to be rather worried about public security and indeed there were many serious criminal cases before Macao's return to the motherland, the pollsters said at a press conference. As to the chief executive himself, 5.7 percent of those polled said they were "extremely satisfied" with his performance in the past three months and 48.9 percent "fairly satisfied" while 31.8 percent described his performance as "OK." |
